The Black Ruby Barb (Pethia nigrofasciata), also known as the Purple-Headed Barb, is a striking freshwater fish prized in the aquarium hobby for its dramatic colouration and active schooling behaviour. Native to the shaded, slow-moving forest streams of Sri Lanka, this medium-sized barb brings vibrant colour and lively movement to community tanks. Appearance: One of the most notable things about Black Ruby Barbs is how their appearance changes as they grow and mature. Juvenile Black Ruby Barbs are understated compared to the adults. Still attractive in their own right but resembling a tiger barb in appearance. Yellowish body and bold black stripes. These stripes help the young fish camouflage in the wild. Adult females look very similar. They retain the same pattern but get deeper colours. Adult males look incredibly different. Their bodies deepen to rich ruby red or purplish-red colour. They have a bright head and face and get darker toward the tail. The two tones are a striking contrast.
