The Gold Nugget Pleco L177, Baryancistrus Xanthellus, is a beautiful pleco found where the Rio Iriri joins the Xingu, a part of the Amazon River that runs through Brazil. It is a reasonably large species, reaching a potential 24cm when fully grown. There are several variations of the Gold Nugget Pleco. The L177 is characterized by a black body with bright yellow seams on the dorsal fin and tail. Gold Nugget Pleco L177 also has much larger spots than other variants. Gold Nuggets can be a territorial species as they mature. Providing caves in the form of wood and rock piles can help reduce this as it breaks up territories. Good tank mates include species of Tetra, Rasbora, Gourami and dwarf cichlids. Temperatures between 25°C-30°C are ideal. Good water parameters and high oxygenated water are also key to successfully keeping this species. Also, they prefer slightly acidic conditions, so a pH of between 6.5-7.4 is best. Sexing Baryancistrus Xanthellus is difficult unless the fish are mature. Males have broader heads and narrower bodies, and females are wider across the abdomens. There is no noticeable difference in odontodal growth in either sex. Gold Nugget Pleco L177 feeding requirements In the wild, these plecos primarily eat diatoms and other algaes, as well as insect larvae, crustaceans and other protein based foods. In the aquarium they are happily omnivorous and will accept a mixture of different foods. To keep them healthy and in good condition, a combination of algae pellets, insect and protein based foods is a must. Here at the Abyss Aquatic Warehouse we believe in only providing the best for our customers. All of our fish are fed a varied diet of dried and frozen foods. Also, we ensure they are in perfect condition before they are shipped out. To view our other Pleco species please click here.
