Zebra Pleco L046, Hypancistrus zebra, is one of the most sought after species of pleco. In the wild they are found only in the Rio Xingu, a part of the Amazon River that runs through Brazil. The collection of wild fish is illegal, and the vast majority of specimens in the hobby will be captive bred. Even for a Hypancistrus pleco, the Zebra Pleco L046 is a very small species. Full grown, it reaches 5-8 cm. The body is a stunning white in colour, with black stripes running the length of the body. The dorsal fin is a beautiful iridescent blue. Zebra Pleco L046 are not aggressive with each other, or other fish species. Ensure plenty of caves and hiding places to provide enough territories if keeping them in a group. These plecos like highly oxygenated water and prefer slightly acidic conditions, so a stable pH of between 6.5-7.2 is best. Zebra Plecos prefer slightly warmer conditions, somewhere between 26°C-30°C is ideal. A fast flow provided by powerheads are also a good idea when keeping this species. Good tank mates include species of tetra, Corydora, Rasbora and other peaceful and current loving fish. Sexing this species is difficult in young fish. The first pectoral ray of the male is thicker, and in breeding condition they develop odontodes. A broader head and slimmer body would also indicate a male. The female is wider across the body, and the stripes may curve slightly as a result. Zebra Pleco L046 feeding requirements In the wild, the Zebra Pleco is omnivorous with a preference of insect larvae, crustaceans, other protein based foods. In the aquarium they are happily omnivorous and will accept a mixture of different foods. To keep them healthy and in good condition, a combination of insect and protein based foods is a must. Here at the Abyss Aquatic Warehouse we believe in only providing the best for our customers. For this reason all our fish are fed a varied diet of dried and frozen foods enriched with vitamins. Also, we ensure they are in perfect condition before they are shipped out. To view our other Pleco species please click here.
