The Neon Blue Goby, Stiphodon Atropurpureus, is a fantastic little fish with bags of character. Found in the Philippines, Taiwan and southern Malaysia, fully grown they achieve a size of 4-5cm. When not displaying, they are difficult to sex with both males and females being a pale tan colour. Once the males colour up they become a spectacular sight; their bodies darken and they develop a striking blue stripe that runs the length of their body. Providing basic requirements are met, Neon Blue Gobies are relatively easy to care for. They require highly oxygenated water. This can be achieved through the use of a large filter, air pump or powerhead. They are mildly territorial amongst themselves, so the addition of plenty of hiding spaces in the form of caves, rock formations, wood and leaf litter is beneficial. Males tend to squabble the most, so providing cover will keep stress between them to a minimum. Neon Blue Gobies will dig into substrate to sleep or spawn in. Keep that in mind when placing rocks to prevent any risk of collapse. They don’t sleep in the same burrow every night, and will often bicker with each other over who gets to sleep where. These gobies are peaceful, and make for an unusual addition to tanks with other smaller, peaceful species of fish. Whilst they are not strictly algae eaters, Neon Blue Gobies are biofilm grazers, meaning that they feed on micro-organisms that form in algae. They will enthusiastically accept live and frozen foods. If feeding the latter, be sure to enhance their diet with garlic and vitamins to provide more nutrients. Once settled, Neon Blue Gobies will also some times accept dried foods.
