Tank Bred Goldflake Angelfish, Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus, also go by the name Gold Spotted or Gold Spangled Angelfish. Like many members of this genus, adults and juveniles look like one another. As the name suggests, Goldflake Angelfish feature dazzling golden scales. Black caudal, dorsal and anal fins contrast against the Angels’ body beautifully. These fins also sport electric blue bands along the edge. The Goldflakes’ face features a black mark on the forehead and a blue smudge over the lips and cheeks. The presence of a tear drop mark on young Goldflake Angelfish dorsal fin differentiates them from the adults. Black stripes also run vertically through the juveniles eyes, joining up with the mark on their forehead. This is in addition to them having a brighter body. Large Angels are from the Pomacanthidae family. The name is Greek for, “cover” (poma) and “thorn” (akantha), which refers to the pair of strong spines on the gill cover. In the wild, Goldflake Angelfish come from the Pacific Ocean. Particularly around small islands in the central and west Pacific Ocean, such as the Line, Phoenix and Caroline islands. Reports of Goldflake Angelfish in the Indian ocean, around Christmas island, have also been made. In nature, Goldflake Angels graze on macroalgae and sessile invertebrates, such as sponge and tunicates. Their eating habits make them unsuitable for marine aquariums with coral, as they do tend to nip. However, it may be possible to keep some carefully selected coral species in the same tank as this fish. We strongly recommend consulting a member of staff on the issue. Gold Spotted or Gold Spangled Angelfish In The Aquarium. It is important to have plenty of nooks or crannies where your Tank Bred Goldflake Angelfish can explore and feel at home. Keepers may also want to get a jump guard to stop any accidents. These fish are omnivores and do best when fed a varied diet. They will accept frozen Mysis shrimp and enriched frozen brine shrimp. We enrich all our frozen food with garlic and vitamins. These are great for keeping fish healthy by providing them with the nutrition otherwise lost in frozen food. In doing so, these additives support their immune system and increase longevity. Tank Bred Goldflake Angelfish will graze on marine algae that can be secured to the side of the tank with clips. Over time they will accept high-quality pellet or flake. We adapt all our Angel Fish to aquarium life before they leave us.
